Uralvagonzavod will reveal the Armata in 2015

The Russian Ministry of Defense has approved the technical draft of a common platform for the new Armata armored vehicle, which will form the basis for the manufacture of a new tank, a heavy infantry fighting vehicle, an armored personnel carrier, and a recovery vehicle. The work is proceeding on schedule, and the ministry expects a prototype of the new platform to be ready as soon as 2015.

The parameters of the new tank, which the engineers at the Uralvagonzavod research and production corporation are planning to build based on the Armata, have not been released. But, Igor Korotchenko, the editor-in-chief of the journal Natsionalnaya Oborona, told RusBusinessNews that the design includes an uninhabited tower with the crew in an armored capsule, the ammunition in the rear compartment, automated processes, and a new control system.

The Armata is being created very quickly, so it is quite likely that the new tank will include all the proven ideas and technology from the design of the Object 195 tank, which the Russian Ministry of Defense stopped funding in 2011. The designs for the Object 195, which journalists dubbed the T-95, grew overly complicated and expensive - thus this new tank will have to be simpler, cheaper, and more reliable.
