VSMPO-AVISMA has produced a shockproof container for radioactive materials24.06.2013 — News SVERDLOVSK REGION The VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation, OJSC has completed assembly of the world's second TUK-145/C container, which is designed to transport spent nuclear fuel by air. The product is being manufactured under a Russian-American program to return highly enriched fuel from foreign research reactors (Russian Research Reactor Fuel Return - RRRFR). VSMPO-AVISMA's press office told RusBusinessNews that the design of the transportation and packaging container (TUK) will preserve the integrity of the cask containing the spent nuclear fuel, even if the airplane carrying it would crash. The outer shell is shockproof and filled with hollow titanium spheres. If the container fell, the spheres would burst and protect the cask inside from the excessive acceleration. The first TUK-145/C was assembled at VSMPO-AVISMA in June 2012. A schedule for using both shockproof containers has been drawn up for the next several years. |
