Nizhnevartovsk is the second largest city of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Ugra. It is located on the river Ob.
The total population is 244 thousand people.
This is the place of the Russia's largest oilfield - the Samotlor field. About 20% of the Russian oil is produced in the Nizhnevartovsk district.

 

Historical reference

In the early XX century this place was nothing but a small jetty where commercial cargo boats could replenish the firewood stock. The local population was mostly engaged in hunting and fishing.
With the discovery of oil in the 1960's, the taiga village Nizhnevartovskoje began to grow and gradually became a modern city.

Economy

The entire city infrastructure is focused on the support for the oil and gas production. In 2008, the companies operating in the region produced 37.6 million tons of oil and 5.8 billion cubic meters of gas.
The largest oil and gas company operating within the Nizhnevartovsk district is TNK-BP Management.
Air, rail, and water transport connects the city with other regions. The Nizhnevartovsk airport is one of Russia's twenty largest airports. The river navigation connects Nizhnevartovsk with 28 cities of Russia and Kazakhstan.
Nizhnevartovsk is a dynamically growing city with a promising future. One indication of this is stable population growth at the rate of approximately 2,000 persons per annum.

Culture & Education

The city has a well established network of kindergartens, comprehensive schools, and vocational training institutes.
The young people of Nizhnevartovsk have access to higher education at the Nizhnevartovsk State Humanitarian University and branches of 14 other Russian universities.
Nizhnevartovsk has 24 municipal libraries, several cinemas, museums, two puppet theatres, and a drama theatre.
