UVZ and Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc to develop a locomotive for Russia

Uralvagonzavod Research and Production Corporation, OJSC and Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc, a US-based company, have signed a memorandum of understanding. The parties have plans to jointly develop and manufacture diesel-electric locomotives in the territory of Russia.

According to the information received by RusBusinessNews from the press service of Uralvagonzavod, new locomotive will be constructed using diesel engine EMD 16-710 and Electro-Motive Diesel’s railway alternating current system. Localization level of locomotives manufactured in Russia will be brought to 50%. In the longer term, there is a possibility that a locomotive which runs on natural gas as fuel will be designed.
