Elsag Datamat Road Project Cancelled in Ekaterinburg

The smart traffic lights project in Ekaterinburg is postponed for an indefinite time. Elsag Datamat, an Italian company, did not manage to secure the three year project for 186.5 million roubles (4.2 million Euro).

Sensors installed into the road service were expected to be the basis of Ekaterinburg’s traffic management system. It was planned to have them installed in the 10 most problematic road crossings by September 2009. In 2010 the system was expected to include 135 crossings having increased the throughput capacity of the roads by 30%.

According to the official version the tender has been cancelled due to the lack of funds in the municipal budget. RusBusinessNews sources insist, however, that the antimonopoly service started questioning the competition documentation. It was compiled with a large number of violations and contributed to the win of the Italian company that has been developing the project since 2007.
