Russia And USA One Step Further Away From Nuclear Abyss

18.09.2009 — News

Russian and USA will strive to work together on risk assessment of missile proliferation in the World. Dmitri Medvedev, the Russian President, made this statement in response to the change of plans of the American administration regarding the deployment of missile defence systems in Europe.

Barack Obama, the US president, made a statement on 17 September that instead of a missile defence system a so called layered defence system will be created. Pentagon, therefore, has scrapped the plans to deploy a radar station and missile interceptors in the Czech Republic and Poland which were a cause of so much discontent in the Kremlin.

Mr Medvedev said: "We value the US president's responsible approach towards the implementation of our agreements. I am ready to continue the dialogue."

With the new president the US is planning to establish a new defence system taking into account Russia's interests. The main threat, as it has been declared before, the White House sees in Iran's nuclear power. However, the Pentagon points out Iran is focusing the efforts on the development of short- and medium-range missiles. The Russian authorities are going to undertake a range of measures enabling the restored trust to the entirely peaceful content of Iran's nuclear programme.

The President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinezhad made a statement on 17 September that his country does not need nuclear weapons. According to him, nuclear arms are a "thing of the past" and the Islamic Republic does not want to have such arms.

RusBusinessNews experts point out that the modernisation of Iran's nuclear plans may have been the key precondition for Moscow's support given to Mahmoud Ahmadinezhad in the Presidential election in the summer 2009.
