"Evraz Group" Planning Production Facilities Development in Nizhniy Tagil

"Evraz Group" has finally decided against the construction of the large diameter pipe plant at the OJSC Nizhniy Tagil Iron and Steel Works. This project has been initiated by JSC "Gazprom" in 2001 and was estimated to be worth 750-900 million US dollars.

Aleksey Kushnarev, the Managing Director of the enterprise, told RusBusinessNews that similar facilities have been commissioned in recent years by a number of Russian companies. At the same time he did not rule out that in the foreseeable future a decision will be made regarding the construction of a new thick sheet mill in Nizhniy Tagil. Products made with this mill may be in demand in bridge and ship building sectors. At the moment Russian companies import rolled metal of this type from Germany and Japan.

The construction of a new converter shop capable of making 3-3.5 million tons of steel annually is another investment priority for "Evraz". Moreover, a project for the construction of an additional blast furnace for the production of crude iron is being developed. "Nizhniy Tagil Iron and Steel Works will be a construction site never seen in Russia before," Mr Kushnarev asserted.
