The Sverdlovsk Oblast
The Sverdlovsk Oblast lies in the centre of the Urals economic region. Total area: 194.8 thousand square kilometres, population: 4.4 million people. The administrative centre of the Oblast is the city of Ekaterinburg. The flight time to Moscow is 2 hours. Key industries of the Sverdlovsk Oblast are ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, metal working, defence industry, and heavy engineering. Moreover there is a well-developed fuel and energy industry and production of construction materials as well as extensive extraction of ore minerals and non-metallic mineral resources. The Oblast ranks third in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg in terms of its economic potential.
